The Cathedral

Santiago's Cathedral is the ultimate destination of the pilgrims who undertook the Way.
Built around the 11th century, the cathedral is the place where the remains of St. James are kept. A huge flight of steps opens on to the Cathedral Square, with the baroque façade overlooking it.

The inside of the cathedral is just as majestic as the outside, since it was built with the purpose to contain the throngs of pilgrims who gather here to pay homage to the Saint.

There are often long winding queues of pilgrims and followers here, waiting to reach St. James’ statue and, as tradition has it, to lean one’s forehead on it.
